Busy week. Driving around the Bay Area (and beyond) dropping off and picking up work. About all I could do was get handles on cups and teapots. Today I have to drive out and pick up clay. So off I go. I'll get a handle on my schedule next week I hope. I need a full week of solitude and away from the car!

|demo bust nearly done|
This is the last weekend to see Barbara's and my work at the Pence Art Gallery. If you are going up there from the Bay Area (or from the Sierra or the Valley) be sure to check out the Farmer's Market in Davis. Also for more ceramic fun and other art visit the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.
I finished the piece I started at the demo for the Pence. Most of the questions were about techniques and where do I get my ideas for a piece. It seems silly to say out loud that most of my pieces tell me. I do think about each piece for weeks sometimes for months before I even get started. Still I find the best thing to do when I feel stuck is to keep going. If I think too much I would never get anything done!

Early morning only a few people in this area of Golden Gate Park. This photo is fuzzy. I just loved all the verticals--the signs giving directions so very negative against the calm beauty of a tea garden--I have a quirky sense of humor.

Wanted to work all this week on keepsake jars. Didn't happen. The summer fog is okay. I don't mind it. It's just that it is unseasonably cool. As I throw outside, the shivering tends to get in the way of centering. Physically and mentally.
We are off to see the Picasso exhibit at the deYoung Museum.

After all this I remembered I had taken picture of some thistles last year on a camping trip. I had a reference, but didn't use it. I just remember how the soft and radiant flowery purple top glistened with dew. Now I see the thorny base is taller. I will probably do a quick sketch of thistles with a longer base. Somehow my memories of thistles in the early morning sun translated to these dancing thistles with longer flowery crowns reaching for the sun.

For a long time yesterday morning I sat at my table doodling. I had covered it with some newsprint and started sketching. I decided that there were some bits of the sketches I would use and leave the rest to chance. Once slipped with black engobe that first scratch is a commitment...a blank sheet of paper waiting for its story.

Bee Puppeteer was sold over the weekend. The show opened July 1st. The reception is July 8. This piece was started outside in the foggy summer morning. I had to keep dragging it back and forth. In and out of the studio. It was made with a feeling of hope. The scarf wraps a shaven head and is knotted in the back. The flowers are stamped clay. I made a sunflower stamp and impressed balls of very soft clay, 18 altogether. I wanted the discs to retain the look of stamped clay. So there is layer of crusty crawling glaze to emphasize the clay texture. It looks like cracked dried mud. There are two rows of discs back to back. The bee puppet comes off to reveal a white finger (shaded from the sun.) There is all sorts of texture and layers of underglazes. I have found the only way I can get rich color is from layering colors and washes.

This postcard is actually a tri-fold. I received a pdf from the Bedford Gallery of all three sides. It isn't very clear. As a whole, it is a beautiful layout postcard that's exciting and full of information. It lists all the artists. Clearly states the proposal of the exhibit and describes how it was curated.

One year ago, on this date, I started this blog.
It is beautiful day. No morning fog. I went for a bike ride. Came home and threw 4 jars with lids out on the deck. Sat down to take a break and check out my blog to see what I wrote on the first day....finding center and letting go............That day I was throwing little jars and trimming lids from the day before. It was a day like today.
